Statement by Premier, Minister of Finance, and Minister of Tourism, Culture and Sustainable Development

Honourable Dr. Natalio D. Wheatley

On the Passing of Dr. Robert Mathavious

15 September 2025

With profound sorrow, I extend condolences on behalf of the Government and people of the Virgin Islands on the passing of Dr. Robert A. Mathavious, O.B.E., former Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of the Virgin Islands Financial Services Commission, to his beloved wife Prudence, his daughter Jaydn, and his extended family.

Before leading the Commission, Dr. Mathavious served as the Territory’s Financial Secretary. In every role, he distinguished himself as more than a pioneer, a visionary whose leadership was instrumental in shaping the Virgin Islands into one of the world’s most respected financial services jurisdictions.

His decades of service were marked by integrity, innovation, and an unwavering commitment to excellence, which earned him deep respect and recognition at home and across the globe. His contributions went beyond management, regulation, and compliance. He mentored generations of professionals, championed the rule of law, and safeguarded the Virgin Islands’ credibility during times of challenge and change.

Dr. Mathavious was a titan of integrity and innovation whose legacy will forever guide our future. He understood that our reputation was our greatest currency and worked tirelessly to ensure that the Virgin Islands stood tall among international financial centres. Because of his vision and strong foundation, our financial services industry will continue to thrive as a global leader, carrying forward Dr. Robert Mathavious’s indelible legacy.

On behalf of a grateful Territory, I extend deepest sympathies to his family, friends, and colleagues. May you find comfort in knowing that his impact endures — not only in policies and institutions, but also in the lives and hearts of all who had the privilege to know and work with him.

May his soul rest in eternal peace
