The BVI is one of the region’s foremost international financial centres. As at March 2008, there were approximately 430,000 active international business companies on the Companies Register. Principal activities include corporate domicile, trust and estate planning, mutual fund administration, and management and captive insurance companies.
The Territory prides itself on providing a safe, secure and stable environment from which companies and individuals can manage their worldwide financial concerns. The jurisdiction has built a reputation for being responsive to the business community, innovative in its approach to legislation and scrupulous in its regulation.
In 2007, the British Virgin Islands was admitted to ordinary membership of the International Organisation of Securities Commissions (IOSCO), an achievement that recognised the BVI Financial Services Commission’s robust international cooperation framework and its longstanding commitment to comply with international standards.
The Global Financial Centres Index, published by the City of London, lists the BVI in 34th place among the 69 leading international finance centres.
